Discernment Counseling

Discernment Counseling

Discernment Counseling is a pathway to communication for couples unsure of whether to come to couple therapy, who may be on the brink of divorce. This is a short term agreement for couples in crisis to come together for one to five sessions, with a singular goal: to help them carefully consider the options and weigh decisions about the future of the marriage with the guidance of a highly trained therapist.

The method was developed based on decades of research by Marriage and Family Therapist Bill Doherty, Ph.D. who saw the need to offer something different to couples who come in unsure of whether the marriage can or should be saved. Typically, these couples come in with one partner wanting out of the relationship, while the other may be highly motivated to change and save the relationship. Couple therapy may even be unethical in these cases, if the agenda of both partners is not to reconcile and restore their connection. These are “mixed agenda” couples, and they require a completely different approach than traditional couple therapy.

Couples who go through Discernment Counseling most often come out of the experience feeling more confident about their next steps. The ones who choose to reconcile are more prepared and committed to giving their best effort to the hard work of couple therapy; the couples who choose to divorce report a calmer, more peaceful separation process, often with a smoother divorce process because of the work done in Discernment Counseling.
